Why use video captions?

Video captions are typically displayed towards the bottom of the video window, and are usually a transcript of the audio in the video you are watching.

So why are captions important?

Traditionally captions were developed to increase accessibility with the hearing-impaired, but one major reason people are using captions now is due to their environment. Your audience consumes content any place, anytime. In fact, according to a study by Ofcom, 80% of people who watch video with closed captions on are not deaf or hard of hearing. Put simply, Captions let viewers watch your video in more places.

And then there is the language barrier – for non-native language viewers, its a very cost effective way to localise your content to a global audience

And lets not forget the search engines – transcripts allow them to crawl the full text of your video content so it can be properly indexed and found in online searches.
